071111 Celtic ManCity

This was a game won and lost in the first sixteen minutes.

From the kick off Celtic set the tempo with a determined and purposeful display which unsettled PSV and prevented them from developing their passing game; a characteristic seen in their two previous group matches. In fact it was Celtic who were moving the ball quickly, switching play and setting PSV all the problems.

Celtic’s Twardzik looked dangerous running at defenders, narrowly shooting over the bar and then bringing a save from Verstappen which was scrambled away for a corner. Down the right Fisher and Herron posed a serious threat with their deliveries from the wing.

The breakthrough came on 11 minutes when Celtic were awarded a penalty for a foul in the box; Twardzik slotted calmly past the keeper. Celtic continued to press and two minutes later scored again when PSV failed to clear and Callum McGregor responded with a well placed lob.

The 3rd Celtic goal came as a result of a goalkeeping error; the ball was fumbled into the path of John Herron who finished from close range.

PSV showed determination and pulled one back just before half time when Antonio smashed the ball into the roof of the net from 10 yards.

The 2nd half saw a different PSV side who moved the ball quicker, forcing Celtic to defend deep. Neither side threatened to score though with possession regularly changing as the midfield battled it out.

PSV had the first real chance, a header that was well saved by Fasan who just managed to push it onto the bar.

In the 81st minute PSV went down to 10 players when Bakkali picked up an injury as they had already made the permitted changes.

Just as the game was drawing to a close a heated exchange resulted in a booking for Celtic’s Heron and a red card for PSV’s Rayhi.

The result leaves Group 4 in an interesting position, with half the games played there are just three points separating all four teams. Click here for the group table.
