Group 3’s top two clash at de Toekomst was marred by a torrential downpour throughout, making playing conditions very difficult. Both teams battled through however and an exciting game resulted.
Ajax started the stronger of the two sides, retaining possession well. This led to the first scoring opportunity on 17 minutes when Pomazun made an amazing save to stop a shot from point blank.
A minute later CSKA’s Bagdasaryan was unfortunate to sustain a nasty looking leg injury and had to be replaced.
Ajax continued to press and had a series of chances as De Sa and Menig tested the well organised CSKA defence. In fact it was De Sa who setup Van Kessel after a terrific run, the forward was unable to connect however.
A minute later the away side capitalised on a misplaced pass to intercept and score with a thunderous strike from Netfullen into the bottom corner from twenty metres out.
Both sides then began creating chances, but it was the impressive Menig who brought the scores level after cutting in from the left wing to drive the ball low past the keeper. This left the teams to go into the break at one a piece.
Ten minutes into the second half and Pomazun was forced to make another important save after a twenty-five metre strike from Sporkslede. Minutes later he was unable to do anything about Van Den Boomen’s powerful shot from just outside the box, and the Dutch side took the lead.
CSKA looked to have got back into the game in the 80th minute, but the goal was disallowed for offside.
They continued to fight for the equaliser but to no avail. With just minutes left it was Ajax’s keeper, Leeuwenburgh, forced to save his team as he did well from an effort just outside the box.
The result leaves CSKA top of the group, however Ajax are just three points behind with two games in hand. (Click here to view the group table.)
