Liverpool were boosted by the return of Adam Morgan, Stephen Sama and Conor Coady for a game they had to win to keep their qualification hopes alive.
Liverpool lined up 4-2-3-1, while Rosenborg opted for a 4-3-3 formation. The home side started well and after several dangerous runs down the left flank Kris Peterson won a corner in the 15th minute. His in swinging delivery was met by Lloyd Jones who found the back of the net to put Liverpool ahead.
After an even passage of play, ten minutes later Haarber struck the post with a fine effort for Rosenborg. Five minutes later Morgan made it 2 – 0 after a quick turn and shot from the edge of the area following typically good approach work from Ibe.
It was then Liverpool’s turn to be unfortunate as Sokolik had a header cleared off the line then Pelosi hit the post following yet more effective build up play from Ibe.
Rosenborg pulled a goal back on 38 minutes when Martin Lundal let fly with an unstoppable half volley from 20 yards. However, Liverpool's two goal cushion was restored just before the half time whistle when Morgan scored his second of the night.
After a lovely one two with Pelosi, the striker's initial effort was kept out by Jacob Storevik, but the number 9 reacted quickly to keep the ball in play and make it 3-1.
The opening of the second half hit a frantic pace as the game became end to end.
Rosenborg went to 4-4-2 when Robin Bjornholm came on for Magnuss Blakstad and tried to take the game to Liverpool. They had a great chance to score in the 83rd minute when right back Alseth swung in a beautiful cross from the right, but Alexander Sørloth couldn't get a touch on it.
Two minutes later they had another opportunity when substitute Bjornholm found himself one on one with the Liverpool keeper but failed to reduce the deficit.
In the final minute substitute Jerome Sinclair, the youngest player on the pitch, scored an excellent individual goal to take the game out of reach for the Norwegian side.
Liverpool proved that they could handle the pressure well and finished the game 4 – 1 having beaten top of the group Rosenborg. To view how the tables now stand click here.
