Match Report

A passionate crowd at the Constant Vanden Stock Stadium witnessed a close encounter that ended in a narrow 2 – 1 victory for Wolfsburg; their first in this season’s NextGen campaign.

Both sides started well and saw chances in the opening minutes, with perhaps Wolfsburg’s Avdijaj coming closest with a close range effort that went narrowly over. Anderlecht did however respond immediately as Alvarex slipped into the opposing penalty area, and shot just wide with a finish that had beaten the keeper.

Wolfsburg began to grow in confidence and deserved their goal on the 21st minute when Avdijaj beat Roef with a composed finish. His joy at scoring was slightly tampered by his over exuberant celebration that earned him the first yellow of the game.

Just over ten minutes later the away side doubled their lead through a simple tap in from Hauck, set up by a brilliant run from Bülbül.

Wolfsburg started the 2nd half strongly and had a golden opportunity to seal the game in the 50th minute when a flowing move found Kleihs unmarked in front of goal, but his header just cleared the bar.

Anderlecht gradually began to dominate possession as they were roared on by their supporters, and had a series of chances. The Wolfsburg defence held strong but were fortunate when Praet's shot hit the bar with Klaus beaten.

Anderlecht's pressure was rewarded in the 71st minute when Bruno found the net from close range to make the game 2-1. Anderlecht were unlucky not to be level 2 minutes later but Heylen's header hit the post and rebounded to safety.

As Anderlecht pressed for the equaliser they were forced to leave gaps in their defence and Wolfsburg spurned an opportunity to seal the game when substitute Cigerci shot just wide. Anderlecht substitute Kawaya then produced a fine save from Klaus to deny Anderlecht the equaliser they will feel their second half response deserved.

Wolfsburg showed their strength and weathered periods of heavy pressure with composed defending and the importance of the three points was evident from their celebrations at the final whistle.
